Usage Note
Aliw encompasses both the idea of being comforted in sadness and of finding joy or entertainment. It is used when someone cheers up a grieving person (umaliw) and also in the context of leisure and fun (aliwan, meaning amusement park or entertainment). It reflects the Filipino value of emotional support within community.
