Usage Note

Imam is borrowed from Arabic via Malay and Tausug and refers to the Muslim religious leader who leads prayers, officiates at marriages and funerals, and serves as a respected community authority in Muslim-majority areas of Mindanao and Sulu. The word carries the same community weight as 'pari' does in Catholic communities.
