Usage Note
Lalawigan is the Tagalog term for a Philippine province, the primary administrative division below the national level. Filipinos often contrast 'lalawigan' with 'lungsod' (city) when discussing rural versus urban life. Going home to one's province for holidays is a deeply cultural act called 'uwian'.
