Sobre is borrowed from Spanish 'sobre' and is the standard Tagalog word for envelope, widely understood by all Filipinos. Culturally, sobre also refers to the cash-filled envelopes given as gifts at weddings and birthdays — a deeply embedded Filipino giving tradition.
