Usage Note
Gat is a pre-colonial honorific title used for datus, chiefs, and respected leaders in the Philippine archipelago. It is now primarily encountered in historical and literary contexts. Many Philippine national heroes have been posthumously given this title — such as Gat Jose Rizal — as a mark of cultural pride and reclamation of indigenous heritage.
