Usage Note
Engkomyenda comes from Spanish encomienda and refers to the colonial land-grant system in which the Spanish Crown assigned a territory and its inhabitants to a colonist who could extract tribute and forced labor. It is studied in Philippine history as a symbol of colonial oppression and a root cause of agrarian unrest.
