niyog
coconut tree; mature coconut fruit
Usage Note
Niyog refers to the mature coconut or the coconut tree itself, and is sometimes called the 'tree of life' in the Philippines due to its many practical uses — the husk for fuel, the shell for utensils, the meat and milk for cooking, and the leaves for weaving. It is distinguished from 'buko', which refers to the young, green coconut.
