Usage Note
Putok covers a wide range of bursting or explosive actions: gunshots, firecrackers, volcanic eruptions, and the pop of a balloon. In informal usage, it also colloquially refers to strong body odor ('amoy-putok'), a humorous euphemism. During the Filipino New Year celebration, 'putok' of firecrackers is a defining sensory experience.
