Usage Note
Hingi is used when requesting something without the expectation of returning it, distinct from hiram (to borrow). It is frequently paired with the polite particle po when asking favors from elders or figures of authority.
Examples
" Hingi po ako ng tubig. "
Natural Translation
May I please ask for some water.
Literal Translation
Request polite I of water.
" Hingi lang ako ng kaunting tubig. "
Natural Translation
I am just asking for a little water.
Literal Translation
Request only I of little water.
