Usage Note
Ang is the most fundamental grammatical marker in Tagalog, used to mark the topic (subject focus) of a sentence. Unlike the English 'the,' ang does not indicate definiteness in all cases — it simply signals which noun is in focus. It cannot be omitted and is one of the first markers learners must master.
