Hiwalay means separated, apart, or estranged — and is the standard Tagalog word for describing a couple that has broken up or separated (though divorce is not legally available in the Philippines). 'Hiwalay na sila' (they're separated now) is a common phrase. It also describes physical separation of objects or people.
