Usage Note

Subalit is a native Tagalog conjunction equivalent to 'but' or 'however', used to introduce a contrasting clause. It is considered more formal or literary than pero (borrowed from Spanish) and is the preferred choice in written Tagalog, speeches, and formal discourse.

Natural Translation

I'm tired, but happy.

Literal Translation

Tired I, but happy.

Natural Translation

I want to go, but it is raining.

Literal Translation

Want I to go, but raining.

Natural Translation

We prepared thoroughly for the project, but the management still did not approve it due to a lack of funds.

Literal Translation

Prepared-for our thoroughly the project, but not still it approved of management because of lack of funds.
